High and low represent order, not oppression; differing functions require no ranking; once hierarchy demands obedience, it degenerates into imprisonment.
One
High mountains tower above deep valleys,
Yet the mountain does not oppress the earth,
Nor does the deep valley bow its head in humility.
High and low exist at the same time;
They define each other, yet need not conflict.
A hierarchy without coercion
Is merely order and position.
When hierarchy begins to demand obedience,
The system has already degenerated into fear.
Two
Tree roots are buried deep in the dark soil,
While blossoms bloom toward the sun.
The root does not command the flower to bloom,
Nor does the flower look down upon the dirt below.
Look at our own bodies:
The eyes watch the path for the feet,
The feet carry the eyes forward.
Neither is more noble; each fulfills its true nature.
When position stems from function, no one is demeaned.
Three
When a system must demand obedience,
It relies on force, not truth.
Force can manufacture the illusion of order,
While secretly nourishing the resistance that will eventually destroy it.
A tyrant forces others to shrink
So that he may appear tall;
A wise person creates a structure
Where everyone can stand at their true height.
Four
Water flows to lower ground not out of obedience,
But because seeking the low is the very nature of water.
The ocean becomes the gathering place for a hundred rivers
Because it willingly stays below all streams.
True order is a riverbed, not a high wall.
It guides force rather than crushing it.
Offering guidance without demanding surrender
Is providing direction, not imposing chains.
Five
Hierarchy without obedience is called coordination;
Hierarchy with obedience is called imprisonment.
When respect replaces fear,
Those above serve those below,
And those below support those above.
The mountain path may have steps high and low,
But every single step belongs to the exact same stone.
